On October 2, Albany Rotary was pleased to have Lin Jun Fan visit our club. Lin Jun was the founder and original editor of Albany Today. She told us about her current position as a journalism teacher in China as well as life in her home country.

September 18, 2012 District Governor Laura Day visited Rotary
Governor Laura Day visited our club today, bringing with her Pancho Padilla and Ass’t District Governor Fred Collignon. The Board meet with them before the meeting and discussed current projects. Laura gave an inspiring speech during lunch, reminding us of the wonderful things Rotary is doing around the world. She also recognized club member Mike McQuiston for becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.

Pam Jones attended our Tuesday meeting to remind us about the great work done by Rotary Foundation.
September 9, Rotary at Solano Stroll
Rotarians from Albany and other BARSHEEP clubs paraded in the Solano Stroll as well sharing information about Rotary and the world wide good we do.
September 4, Marla Stephenson
In a fitting presentation, after several members gave “happy dollars” for the start of the school year, Superintendent Marla Stevenson gave a presentation to the Albany Rotary on Sept. 4. She shared information with us on the financial status of the District. Prior to the start of the meeting, Deirdre Sproul, a Little League parent presented President Caryl with a sponsor plaque and thanked Rotary for supporting Albany Little League.
August 28, 2012 Jack Kenny
Jack Kenny, a member of the Community Access Media Committee, spoke to Albany Rotarians about that City Committee and the work they do. He shared the various ways one can now access coverage of city and school district meetings. He also explained the partnership between the City and AUSD and some wonderful opportunities for students interested in video production. The third annual Albany Film Fest was also focused in his presentation.
Dinner for Relay for Life
Albany Rotary provided dinner for participants in the Albany Relay for Life event on August 25. Pizza and soft drinks were appreciated by those who were walking to raise money in the fight against cancer.
Amercian History Lesson on August 21, 2012
Albany resident Jewel Okawachi, spoke on August 21 about her family’s experiences during World War II in the internment camps. Several members brought their children to learn this important part of American history. Removed from their Albany home, Jewel’s family spent the next few years in a camp in Arizona. Jewel’s father, a dentist, was often paid in produce or small pins that his patients had made from found materials. Jewel’s brother, Taka Nishi was a member of the 442nd Infantry Division and was killed in Italy during the War and is remembered on the plaque at the Veteran’s Torch on Solano.
Rotary at Golden Gate Fields Dollar Days
On Sunday, August 19, Rotary sold dollar hot dogs, beer, water and soda at Golden Gate Fields. This is our first of many such fund raisers this year and was shared with local Boy Scouts. Look for us at our next one in September.
